My New Wholecloth Quilt

I finally finished the adventure of the wholecloth quilt.
The quilt is big and I couldn’t photograph it properly inside my home. Maybe in the future I will take some pictures outside.

I found even a name for it: ” My Rainbow Flower Garden”! Very proud of me – you know I always ask YOU to name my quilts!
Here it is on the floor. It measures 75”.

Wholecloth Quilt with Aurifil 12wt thread Since I made this mini quilt a few months ago I wanted to sew a bigger version.

But the size is not the only difference!

Big quilt –  thick thread!

The mini quilt was quilted with 50 wt Aurifil thread and I wanted this version to be striking –  so I ordered lots of 12 wt spools!
When received the order I was shocked seeing the difference in thickness between this thread and the 15wt thread I use usually.

There were some challenges and I would have loved to think about them before I started the quilt! But sometimes you have to learn from your own mistakes!

It took me three days to quilt the flower sphere (tutorial here).

And the “painted” binding! My hubby asked me if I stitched it with variegated thread. No, I wasn’t that clever when I made the thread order! So I changed the color a lot! And it wasn’t easy at all to thread the needle!

I learned so much stitching this quilt! Challenges are good!
Come back soon and I will tell you everything about free motion quilting with such a thick thread. And about the pattern.

  4. It's beautiful.
I had trouble trying to use a heavier thread too. I've since learned the secret is needle size. The better quality thread have the needle size required on the spool. At the time I said 'never again', but now I'm itching to have another go.

  16. Did you use the 12 weight in the top or bobbin? What size needles did you use? Would you use the 12 weight again? What machine do you have? Sorry for all the questions, I'm intrigued. You got my vote in the bloggers quilt festival.

  17. I love using the 12 wt for hand quilting and when I use it in my machine, I use a large eye needle (100) loosen the tension and increase the stitch length. That is for straight line quilting. I have never tried free motion with it.

Your quilt is just beautiful! Good that you persisted!!

  18. What a beautiful quilt! You did a wonderful job on it – in spite of the issues with the heavy thread. You must admit that is was very effective though!

  21. This is an amazing quilt! I know you have heard that before many times but I hope you don't get tired of it because I have to say it, too. I would love to know how you figured out how to make the flowers look like they were shrinking and disappearing out of sight around the horizon. You are quite the artist in thread! Thank you very much for sharing it with all of us!
