Say “I Love You” — Today, with Stitches
Hug your loved ones. Tell them that you love them. Don’t wait another day, another moment — because only the present is truly granted.
And we, as quilters, are so fortunate. We have a thousand ways to say I love you — through color, fabric, and thread.
Even when life gets busy and there’s no time for a full quilt, we can still make something small that carries our heart in every stitch.
So if you can’t sew a quilt, sew a pouch. And make it UNFORGETTABLE!
🌸 A Little Love, Stitched by Hand
I wanted to make something special for the little girls in my family, so I stitched two pouches. Just regular pouches…at first sight…

But look on the other side! They are actually personalized with stitched labels from my Custom Quilt Label Collection.

Those tiny labels turned simple pouches into treasures. They carry names, a few loving words, and a bit of magic — the kind only handmade things hold.

In two weeks, I’ll visit them, and these little gifts will go with me. I can already imagine their smiles as they see their names stitched into something made just for them.

If you need instructions for sewing a basic pouch, here is a tutorial.
First:
Sew your desired label and trim it to 5 1/2” x 8”.

Choose your favorite quilt-weight fabric and cut the following pieces:
- 2 pieces 1 1/2” x 5 1/2” (stitch them to the left and right edges of the label panel)
- 1 piece 1 1/2” x 10” (stitch it to the bottom edge of the label)
- 1 piece 8 1/2” x 10” (stitch it to the top edge of the label panel)

Place the piece on foam ( or batting or fleece) and quilt as desired.
Then trim the panel to 10” x 14”.

Cut a fabric piece 10” x 14” for lining.
Fold the fabric in half and mark, on the wrong side, the center of the long edges.
Center the 7” zipper opening template (download it here) on the lining, as shown below and draw along the opening of the template.

Place the lining over the main panel, right sides together. Keep in place with pins around the drawn rectangle.
Stitch through both layers along all sides of the yellow rectangle.

Carefully cut down the center of the rectangle, and then clip toward the corners as close as you can without clipping the stitching (cut on the black lines in the image below).

Pull the lining through the hole you just cut to the wrong side of the quilted panel.

Use pins to keep the raw edges aligned as shown below- this is the secret to pressing/creating a smooth and accurate zipper opening.
Turn the piece to the other side …

…
and press the opening.

Add double-sided adhesive tape to the zipper tapes; remove the paper backing.
Position the zipper behind the opening. Stitch all along the opening to secure the zipper in place (see the red marking line).
If your zipper is longer than 7”, trim off the excess.

OPEN THE ZIPPER COMPLETELY!
Separate the lining from the exterior panel. Fold each piece in half, keeping all the edges aligned.
Sew at 3/8’’ from the raw edges of the quilted piece.
Sew at 3/8’’ from the three edges of the lining, leaving a gap in the longer edge.

Trim the seam allowances at corners as shown.

Turn the piece right side up through the gap in the lining. Close the gap in the lining. The pouch is finished.
