The Star of a Quilt

June 2, 2014 3 Comments

Quilt = fabric + batting + thread. It’s amazing what quilters can create with simple things like these. Let’s add some colors (and a design too) and we couldn’t define a quilt better.

Many times all the elements of a quilt contribute to its success. And sometimes one element is more important than other.

I am happy that I managed to make quilts in different techniques that show what important role each element can play in the anatomy of a quilt.

1. Shadow Trapunto Quilt;  2. Patchwork Quilt; 3. Wholecloth Quilt

It was May 2012 when I finished this shadow trapunto quilt. Definitely the batting is the star of this quilt. The batting- this layer that is invisible for most quilts!

Then on April 2013 I made (with my friends) this patchwork quilt. The simple solid fabric allowed us to piece a friendship!

Then I thought that the thread can’t be left out and in May 2014 I finished this wholecloth quilt. This quilt is all about thread!

It would be impossible for me to say which quilt or which technique I love more!

We quilters are very lucky. There are so many things that help us tell our story! What do you use most to tell YOUR story ?

Hi Geta, Your quilts are so beautiful. They seem to really celebrate color and thread and texture. I LOVE them and i know I join a huge group of admirers.
You have asked a very interesting question. It is something that we all are thinking about but hadn't put words to, until you pointed us in that direction.
The three parts of a quilt.
Because second hand quilt magazines are a dime a dozen at quilt shows, I usually treat myself to a handful for inspiration. I have noticed then very clearly, how quilting has changed and is continuing to change, just in these past few years. Even ten years ago, the thread part of the quilt was not such a big deal. Now, those older quilts look like something is missing because we have grown so accustomed to more quilting, either free motion or long arm. I love the texture it adds to quilts. And batting has so improved as well. It used to be that only puffy polyester was available but now every possible blend of cotton and wool etc. is available, with scrim and without, organic or not, pre-packaged or by the meter. Fabric too. Solids were almost impossible to find a few years ago and now are every color in a paintbox.
I find it hard to choose, but I think fabric is still my favourite part of a quilt, both in choosing and working with myself and in admiring, but thread is a close second.

I love all your three quilts, but the second it's my dear, because I was involved in it 🙂
I think that every quilt tell a story, and every new technique is a great joy for a quilter.
