Small shadow trapunto quilts

August 20, 2016 2 Comments

Here are some of my early shadow trapunto quilts- most of them are smaller than 20''. If you don't know this technique, that white design is fluffy polyester batting. The trapunto design is stitched on organza and underneath there are the colored fabric, another layer of batting, and a backing. I love having an online gallery on my blog, so I am motivated to take pictures of a … [Read more...]

2 in 1 quilt

July 8, 2015 14 Comments

Why 2 in 1 quilt? Because on the back it looks like a trapunto quilt... ...and the front is actually a shadow trapunto quilt. A 40'' quilt. You usually see details like this one below in the background of my photos. It is a quilt that I use for its back! I made it in 2008! I could say it's a utilitarian quilt! It's the only wall hanging I use, but not as wall hanging! Since 2008 I … [Read more...]

Shadow Trapunto for Quilts with winter theme

November 19, 2014 11 Comments

Is there a better technique than shadow trapunto to make quilts with winter theme?  I think that the designs of my shadow trapunto quilts look like they are drawn in the snow.   And it's not only the visual effect, if you could touch them...   The quilts below are some of my first shadow trapunto quilts- made in 2008. I think this was my first miniature! I duplicated … [Read more...]

Shadow Trapunto Quilt

October 14, 2014 4 Comments

Here is a Mariner's Compass block on a 12-side shadow trapunto quilt. It measures 17''. Most of my quilts are free motion quilted, but for this trapunto design I used the walking foot. I couldn't have stitched straight lines without it.   These shadow trapunto quilts are truly two sided. On the front you see shadow trapunto, on the back is visible the trapunto. See other shadow … [Read more...]

Shadow trapunto quilts- duplicating quilt designs

September 21, 2014 6 Comments

Do you duplicate the quilts you like a lot? Like making one more version, maybe with other type of prints, or other color palette, but keeping the same pattern? It happened to me only a few times (but I do have a list of quilts I would like to make again someday). Here is one example. You would be tempted to say it is not the same pattern- but it is. These are two shadow trapunto pillows. … [Read more...]

How to quilt spaced pebbles

August 16, 2014 17 Comments

quilt spaced pebbles

Learn to quilt spaced pebbles It's easy- but time consuming as all the pebbles! And it takes a lot of thread! More than you think! Start stitching the pebble as usual. Then outline the first stitching with a new stitching, close to the previous one, but not on top of it. Repeat 3-4 times. Then start a new pebble, leaving enough space between them so they don't overlap. It's fun and … [Read more...]

This shadow trapunto quilting tutorial is part of the series 1 Design - 5 Quilting Techniques. Here is the shadow trapunto sample I stitched  for this tutorial.   Many layers!
