Quilting with THICK thread- 12wt

Free Motion Quilting with thick thread- 12wt

Hello friends!

Do you have thick thread in your box? How thick?

We quilt usually with 40wt or 50 wt. Sometimes we need thinner thread, and other times, when we want to really show off the quilting, then we need a thicker thread. 28wt (30wt) thread works nicely, but 12wt is really a different story! You have to stitch with all these threads to see the benefits of each one.

These days I have stitched some pretty boxes and their edges needed to be covered with a tight zig zag stitching.  For some boxes I used a thick thread (30wt) while for others I used a thin thread; I noticed immediately the difference!

So I thought it is time to use the thick thread again for quilting.
And I made this “wholecloth” version of this applique quilt pattern; the applique version is a quick project but the wholecloth is even quicker!

The thread used for the heart  is Aurifil 12wt and it works wonderfully.

If you have the “Lollipops” or “Fancy Swirls” patterns (and of course, the “Happy Heart”), you can use those designs for wholecloth versions as well.

Quilting with THICK thread 12wt I love free motion quilting (it’s like painting with thread) and I thought it’s time to start making some videos; for now, I don’t know anything about videos but I promise that I will learn!

Watch them on Youtube (bigger screen and more details- if you use a desktop).

I love quilting pebbles too  – for this I used a regular, 50wt Aurifil thread.

  1. I still have a long, long way to go before I can FMQ as smoothly as you do, but I enjoy watching the process (and your little kitty in the background).

  2. Why do you always turn your piece when you free motion. You can go up and down side by side. No turn. Much easier and fast.Specially for larger pieces?

  3. Geta,

This is very cool, neat-o, out-of-site, and awesome too. It really shows how much changing a thread can impact your design. I thought for a moment that your hear was appliqued from a similar colored, but differently patterned fabric. I* had to study it a bit to see that it was all the same fabric.
Thanks for all the things you share with us.
