How to finish the edge of the hexagon quilts

August 9, 2016 7 Comments

Wondering how to finish the edge of your hexagon quilts?

Stitched by hand or by machine, the quilts made out of hexagons, with all those zig zag edges, need finishing (with or without binding)  like any other quilt.

Here are 4 different ways to finish the edge of your hexagon quilts.

1. Straightening  the edges

If you want the fastest (and easiest) method, this is the one.  I finished my Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt this way.

Find the tutorial here.

2.  Hexagon edges

You need additional hexagons but no binding is necessary. Find the tutorial here on Badskirt. You will find a lovely idea for hand quilting too.

3.  Hexagon edges but different as above

Stitched entirely by machine, no additional hexagons or binding needed;  a faster method than the above one, with a different look on the back of the quilt.
Find the tutorial here on Sew Fearless.

4. Binding the hexagon edges

This technique is great for quilts pieced out of large hexagons. You will learn how to bind the hexagon edges.
Find the tutorial on Jaybird Quilts

4 different techniques to finish the edge of your hexagon quilts- it depends on the finished look you want for your quilt and how much time you have for the finishing step.
I hope that these ideas make your choice easier.

Happy sewing hexagons!

I’m so happy to read about these different ways to bind a Hexie quilt. I have straight edged two of mine but I will definitely try one of these finishing options on any others I make. Thank you.

I appliqued the outer hexies to a strip of fabric on all 4 sides, joined the corners, and then bound the straight outer edges.

Next time I’m trying one of your suggestions! Thanks.
