Colorful applique quilt

November 28, 2014 15 Comments

I finished another version of the “Secret Flower Garden” quilt pattern.
This is the mid-size version, the flower sphere measures 20”. The quilt is 27” square.

Here is how it was and how it is now!

After I did the “colored free motion quilting” on this quilt, I wanted to play again with thread on the background.

I used the thick Aurifil 12wt thread.

As you can see, the quilting really shows! I would have loved a pastel color palette more, but these are the colors I have to hand.

On the flowers I quilted with Aurifil 50wt.

The flowers are fusible raw edge appliqued. The fabrics are from the “Pinhead” collection by Michael Miller.

I LOVE this technique, I think it is one of the fastest quilting techniques.

Raw edges after washing – nice!!

I free motion quilted the background but this wavy pattern could easily be quilted with a walking foot as well.

Here is how I marked the quilt top.

The polka dots are a hit alright. Will have to remember to consider them more often. However your background quilting finishes it off so nicely. Love the whole little quilt!!

I like how you have left spaces between hexies. It works nicely!

What gorgeous effect the different quilting has made on your beautiful design! I wondered how you kept the wavy multi-colored lines so flowing and artistic! I love that you pebble quilted each flower center, too, for that contrast. This is incredibly beautiful!
