2 in 1 Quilt Finished

What a terrible week I had!  Just because I ran out of cotton batting.
While I worked on this quilt my only thought was: “I ruined this quilt, I ruined this quilt!” . So I started hating the quilt instead of hating me that I did not wait with this quilt until I have the batting I wanted.
143 cubes, 75″x87″ the final size.

I wanted to quilt the blocks with perfect straight lines and evenly spaced and of course I couldn’t have all the lines like they were stitched by a computer.
My puffy batting made the quilt sandwich bulky and I hardly moved it under the needle. Moreover, the top did not stick so well on polyester batting as it sticks on cotton so the whole week I struggled to move the quilt and keep the top flat!
A cotton batting would have hidden the imperfections – but from a plane the quilt did not look so bad, what do you think?
Every cube was quilted in one continuous line.
I already told to my youngest sister (Alex’s mother) that I have a quilt-surprise for her. “What’s  the occasion?” she asked. Alex’s  first birthday (which will happen in a few days)! So she is now anxious to see it.
I forgot to say her that actually there are two quilts. Look in the picture bellow:
It’s like seeing the empty part of a glass (on the left) or the full glass (on the right). Just by rotating the quilt 180 degrees. A side for every mood!

Here is the back -unfortunately the colors faded a little after the first wash  -stuff bought from Romania!
So I am still sad that I did not make the best quilt, especially with this time-consuming pattern. I usually don’t make compromises with my quilts but this time I had to work with what I had in my stash.

  1. You are so talented and I am so jealous of your skill. To think that you are not happy with that quilt. It is 100 times better than anything I could ever hope to achieve. I am so blessed that I have 4 fabric stores within 30 miles. Imagine what you could accomplish with the ready supplies that you need. You are an amazing artist.

  2. Amazing quilting. Even with continuous lines within each block, that is still a lot of stopping and starting..or could you move from one block to another? It is sad you didn't have cotton batting for this one as it would be so cuddly with the dense quilting. I can't imagine trying to keep the top in place for quilting with poly. You are brilliant!

  3. Your quilt is lovely! It must have been a huge battle with the thick batting.

Thanks for the tip about the free shipping – I will certainly try it – if you add the shipping and customs the batting becomes very expensive here in South Africa too.

  4. Geta – you are wrong, it turned out so pretty and looks great! Sometimes we are just too close to our work and know all the errors or what we believe are errors so don't like it since we imagined it another way. Others don't see that at all – all they see is the beauty of the quilt.

  6. Sorry to hear you had a struggle with this quilt but i think it has turned out just amazing. You are to critical of yourself. I find fm quilting straight lines very difficult. You should give yourself a pat on the back because it is stunning ! 🙂

  7. What a fabulous quilt! I would be thrilled if I could master one even half as good. I love the backing fabric you chose. A nice contrast and compliment to the front, which is SO COOL! I think of a professor I used to work for … a mathematical chemist with a penchant for optical illusions … and how much I'd like to be able to make something like this for him.

  8. All of your quilts are amazing. Great blog!!!

I just became a follower so I could be one of the first to see what gorgeous quilts you will make in the future.

I am starting to dedicate more time to patchwork and quilting and love seeing actually finished pieces like yours.

  9. Geta,
You are such an inspiration! I loved your hexagon quilt- and had to start one of my own. Now this one! Wow!!! I think it's so neat the way it can be seen in two different ways! That's intriguing to me. Your quilting is amazing!

  10. I can truly understand your frustration because in YOUR mind you knew what you wanted to do, and it really stinks when things don't work out that way. However, just as everyone else has said, this quilt is stunning even if it didn't turn out quite as you'd intended. If you really hate it, and I am thinking you don't ;), you're welcome to send it to my house where it will receive lots of love! 😉

  11. I think you're nothing less than a genius! This quilt is fabulous, no matter the small imperfections that only you care. I do love it!. Thanks for the info about cotton batting, I also find only polyester batting in my country, maybe I can get the cotton one when shipping be free.

  12. What a beautiful quilt. Such a pity you're not 100% happy with it, but I think it looks wonderful. We're always our own harshest critics.

  13. Вам наговорили выше столько комплиментов, что мои вам вроде и не нужны, но я в восхищении. А собой недовольны , как правило, все мастера, потому что они всегда смотрят немного вперед и видят то, что могут еще сделать.
    Я покорена вашими работами
