Oilcloth Shopping Bag
I was so anxious to sew with oilcloth! After so many faux leather bags, it was nice to try something new. I chose a simple pattern (my new shopping bag) and it was the best choice.
So how is this oilcloth? Stiff! You wouldn’t say this when you touch it, but when I had to turn the bag from one side to the other, I struggled a little!

I stitched with the walking foot; the oilcloth slides under the foot with more ease than the faux leather. Look at the beautiful, long stitches.

This oilcloth is not the easiest material to sew with, but the designs are wonderful, it is worth the effort to sew at least one small and simple project. Can’t wait to use it! Next time I will try a pouch, or maybe a wallet.
I still want to buy and try the laminate cotton made by the quilting fabric manufacturers. I am curious to compare them.
Happy sewing!

How pretty, Geta! I got two chunks of laminate on clearance, and have been waiting to use them for something fun. A little shopping bag is in works here, too, but won't be as colorful as yours. It's darling! Nice to hear your experience with the stiffness. I may not venture to try oilcloth now.

Nice bag. Congrats on the article in American Quilter! My copy arrived yesterday. It looked like a great project.
Very cute! I can see where the oil cloth might be a bit stiff but the results are wonderful!
Geta, you should be able to buy a Teflon foot for your machine. The oilcloth or plastic will just slide under it. It makes it much easier to sew.
