Do you recall these small pieces? I shared with you that designing and sewing them was addictive! And I hardly could stop at only a few designs: I made designs with 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, and 20 petals. And then for each design, I had to make a few variations: 5 for most of them, fewer for the 4 and 6-petal designs. All my designs measure 14''; this will be my new wholecloth quilt pattern and … [Read more...]
New wholecloth quilt pattern-sneak peek
Here is a sneak peek at my new wholecloth quilt pattern. These days I am experimenting with different designs, batting layers, thread + fabric combinations. It's hard to stop! See for yourself why! Stitching these repetitive designs creates a rhythm that invites you to stitch more and more - it's a kind of addiction! That's why I couldn't stop (designing and sewing) at … [Read more...]
Free Motion Quilting shouldn’t scare you
Here is my new small wholecloth quilt - a new version of this quilt - I left the center rosette unquilted and there is a different - and such FUN - background quilting. The quilt is 20'' and the rosette - 16''. The fabric is Fossil Fern (Benartex) and I quilted with Aurifil. This quilt was entirely free motion quilted - but the center rosette can easily be quilted with the walking … [Read more...]
Coloring with thread
I finished this 20'' piece, this color is so hard to photograph!! Everything was free motion quilted. Coloring this mandala design (it has 40 repeats) with thread was a lovely experience, BUT: - I stitched too much and flattened the design too much (I should have stopped at picture#3 ); - the variegated thread takes too much attention! - the textured quilting outside the … [Read more...]
There is always place for “better”
Do you remember this Aurifil wholecloth quilt? It is one of my favorite quilt. I finished it in a hurry and I did not like how it turned out at all. It's not perfectly flat, it has wavy edges! The quilt is just gorgeous and there was no other choice than to try finishing it in a better way. I removed the binding of the 75'' quilt and I washed, squared and bound it again. And here is the new … [Read more...]
Painted Binding
I thought that a plain white binding is not enough for my new quilt. So I "painted" it - with the thick Aurifil 12wt thread. So much fun! It took me some time and thread... ...and here is- enough for a 80'' square quilt. Now to see how the quilt turned out! UPDATE Finished quilt here. … [Read more...]

How to Make Wholecloth Quilts – Tutorial
This wholecloth quilts tutorial is part of the series 1 Design - 5 Quilting Techniques. The top of a wholecloth quilt is a single piece of fabric - no piecing or appliques. The design must be transferred to the top then the marked fabric is layered with batting and backing and the sandwich is quilted. A wholecloth quilt is about color and texture - one color and a lot of texture; it's … [Read more...]
A small quilt
I made it from leftovers of a large quilt ( a secret one - the secret will be reveal on Sunday !).I made it (and the large one, too) for my mother (she saw them but doesn't know they are for her!). On Sunday we will celebrate her birthday. The top didn't look too pretty, so I had to make a beautiful quilting on it. The back of the quilt: Speaking of back of the quilts:Here are details from the … [Read more...]
