Templates for English paper piecing

June 11, 2018 10 Comments

I think one of the the most popular shapes for English paper piecing is the hexagon. We need paper templates for English paper piecing and we could buy these templates or we could make our own templates. If you think this task is boring and takes too much time, check out the technique I explained here -  it's a fun, quick and easy way to cut piles of templates in no time! But why would we … [Read more...]

A little trick for bag makers

May 13, 2018 13 Comments

The bags we sew are meant to be used and loved. And the more you use and love a bag, the more you have to wash it. Which is not a difficult task, to me, at least. I wash most of the bags in the washing machine, on a gentle cycle. After washing, it comes the annoying job of ironing the bag. Most bags must be pressed after washing (even if they are washed by hand). Depending on the pattern of … [Read more...]

Improve your handmade bags with this zippered pocket

May 12, 2018 6 Comments

The zippered pockets of our bags keep our belongings safe inside the bag so here is a way to add a zippered pocket to your lining (a slip pocket comes as a bonus, too!). It is actually a simple pouch attached to the lining.  Maybe some of you will find this technique easier than other techniques for zippered pockets on the lining. You need two pieces of fabric, for the exterior pocket and … [Read more...]

Rainbow coaster

April 29, 2018 1 Comment

Isn't this block (from the Loving Hugs patterns) wonderful? I have made many two-color versions, now I am glad to see the rainbow version. I started with a 2'' octagon (1 1/2'' finished) and this is the first row of triangles added around the octagon... And this is the second row. It measures now 8 1/2''. Happy quilting! Want to learn more about this piecing … [Read more...]

How to turn an octagon into a square

April 27, 2018 6 Comments

I started this quilt a few years ago (pattern here) and I am happy that  I am finishing it (my baby nephew needs a new quilt!). It started with a 2'' octagon; 8 triangles surround it. The result is a new octagon. Other triangles were added and a new octagon was born. One more time! Isn't the Fossil Fern fabric (by Benartex) gorgeous? A new octagon! I love this shape but it … [Read more...]

Continuous bias binding – cheat sheets, formulas and more

April 15, 2018 8 Comments

In the previous post, I showed you how to make continuous bias binding. The technique is great, but to really benefit of it, you should know how to calculate how much fabric you need to make the desired length of your binding. I am glad to help you with this; I did the math for you, I made some cheat sheets and I also shared the formulas with you. You can download everything at the end of this … [Read more...]

How to make continuous bias binding for quilts

April 12, 2018 10 Comments

Do you use bias binding? It's a must if your quilt has curved edges! I don't make often quilts with curved edges so I usually stay away from it. I prefer the straight binding, made with strips cut on the grain. A few days ago I prepared this piece of fabric  and in order to achieve the desired effect for my binding, I had to make a bias binding,  with fabric strips cut on the bias. I wanted to … [Read more...]

A special binding

April 6, 2018 14 Comments

Hello friends! Do you love preparing and sewing binding to your quilts?  For me, this is not a favorite task. I want to finish it as soon as possible! Usually, I cut straight strips from one of the fabrics used in the quilt and this is my binding. Many times I am lazy and I join the strips with straight seams (not a crime, of course, but here quilt police is right: the bias seams are … [Read more...]

30-Minute Fabric Bowls Pattern

March 18, 2018 16 Comments

If you have some fabric scraps that you cherish and don't know what to use them for, here is an idea. These little bowls measure about 7'' and I needed 10'' fabric and interfacing pieces. They are great for storing work-in-progress projects or for creating beautiful decor, for Easter, as example. The best thing about them: you can sew 2 or 3 in one hour! You need a … [Read more...]

New Wholecloth Quilt Pattern

March 1, 2018 1 Comment

Do you remember these little white hexagon flowers? I love the look so much and I thought to quilt an entire flower sphere with this motif. And here is the result: The flowers are small and easy to quilt and you may think that I changed the color of the thread after each flower? Not at all! I quilted with the same color 4-5 flowers then I changed the thread and quilted other … [Read more...]
