Many quilters like English paper piecing and the hexagon is one of the most popular shapes.
You can buy already-cut hexagon templates. But if you need only a few or an unusual size, or if you don’t want to wait days or weeks to receive them (my case), or if you want to save money, you have to make your own templates.
Cutting templates one by one is boring task and it takes ages! I will show you a technique that cut the time needed for this task by 2, 3, or even more. Isn’t that cool?
Supplies needed for making templates for English paper piecing
- your favorite paper for English paper piecing; you can use even the regular paper you use with your printer, but a better quality (a heavier paper) works better
- a hexagon printed sheet
- paper cutter
- glue stick
- long (quilt) ruler and cutting mat
- scissors for paper
Do not use sheets printed like in the photo below – it’s just a waste of time!
Your hexagons must be printed like in the picture below.
The technique that will save you TONS of
TIME & MONEY!
Underneath the printed paper, add 2,3 or even 4 blank pages – it depends on how heavy your paper is.
Stack the pages. In order to keep the edges aligned, apply glue along the edges of the paper (see the grey areas shown below).
Obviously, do not add glue on the first page and keep the glue away from the printed area.
Using the ruler (I used a quilt ruler), cut first vertically on the dashed red lines shown below – through all the pages.
Before moving the ruler to the next cut, make sure your cut goes through all the pages (cut twice if necessary). The cut must extend a little past the printed area.
Then rotate your cutting mat and cut on the green (horizontal) lines, starting from the center. Do not extend the cuts past the paper’s edges.
Remove the paper outside the printed area.
We have now stacks of 4 rectangles.
Using the sharp point of the cutter, lift up one stack from the cutting mat.
Keeping all the pieces aligned with the top rectangle, cut on the lines to remove the corner triangles.
And here it is: 4 hexagons instead of 1! 16 instead of 4!
You can cut 96 hexagons in about 10 minutes.

Make hundreds in no time!
One of my regrets...or mistakes!
I have been quilting for more than 22 years and I started my first EPP project 10 years after the beginning of my quilting journey.
For 10 years I thought that hand sewing is not for me, because the progress is slow and in the time needed for one project I could sew more projects by machine.
What I did not know at the time - and nobody told me (or maybe I just did not want to listen!) is that the hand sewing experience comes with something more important than number of projects done!
English paper piecing is about...
TIME FOR YOURSELF...
FULFILLMENT. PRIDE. JOY.
If you are already addicted to EPP, you know what I am talking about.
Not so excited about it? Just try this experience!
Can you believe that you can sew such beauty using just ONE shape?
You can use lots of shapes for English paper piecing and here are a few that can be combined with the hexagon to create new designs:
half-hexagons, triangles, diamonds...
Using the same cutting technique described above, you can cut other shapes, but there is one requirement: the sheet must have a special format able to ensure a quick, easy, ACCUARTE and EFFICIENT cutting!
